# Pawstat privacy Pawstat is a little cat that watches your Mac, not you. There is no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting, no ads, and no account to create. Pawstat never asks for your location. The only permission it may ask for is to show notifications, for alerts and reminders you can turn off in Settings. This page lists everything Pawstat stores and every time it talks to the internet. Last updated for version 1.0.0. ## What stays on your Mac Pawstat reads system statistics (CPU, memory, disk, network throughput, battery, temperatures, fans, GPU, and the list of running processes) directly from macOS, on your Mac. None of it is ever sent anywhere. What Pawstat keeps, it keeps locally: | What | Where | |---|---| | Your settings and Overview layout | Pawstat's preferences (`~/Library/Preferences/dev.pawstat.app.plist`) | | Your Fish, mascots, achievements, streak, and Paw Report stats | `~/Library/Application Support/Pawstat/` | | The last forecast for your weather city (so the sky works offline) | `~/Library/Application Support/Pawstat/weather.json` | Alerts (high CPU, heat, low battery, and so on) are local macOS notifications. Nothing goes through a server. ## When Pawstat uses the network There are exactly three cases, and each one is something you turn on or click. ### 1. Weather, for the city you type (optional) Weather is off until you type a city in **Settings > Weather**. Pawstat never uses Location Services. - While you search, the text you type is sent to [Open-Meteo's](https://open-meteo.com) geocoding service (`geocoding-api.open-meteo.com`) to find matching places. - Once you pick a place, only that city's coordinates and time zone are sent to Open-Meteo's forecast service (`api.open-meteo.com`), every 20 to 30 minutes while the weather is on screen or in your menu bar. These are the city's coordinates from the search result, not yours. Remove the city and the requests stop. Open-Meteo is free and needs no key or account; see its [terms and privacy policy](https://open-meteo.com/en/terms). ### 2. Your public IP address (optional) The Network detail view can show your public IP address. Pawstat looks it up only when you click **Show**, with a single request to [ipify](https://www.ipify.org) (`api.ipify.org`). The answer is shown, not saved. ### 3. Update checks Pawstat keeps itself up to date with [Sparkle](https://sparkle-project.org), the standard updater for Mac apps. - On its second launch, Pawstat asks whether it may check for updates automatically. Until you say yes, it only checks when you click **Check now** in Settings or **Check for Updates…** in Mochi's right-click menu. - With automatic checks on, Pawstat downloads a small update feed (`appcast.xml`) from GitHub once a day. When you install an update, the new version is downloaded from GitHub Releases. - The request carries only what any download does: the app's name and version. Sparkle's optional system profile (your Mac model, macOS version, and so on) is turned off and never sent. - Every update is signed, and Pawstat verifies that signature before installing anything. You can turn automatic checks off at any time in **Settings > Updates**. Like every internet request, each of the ones above reveals your IP address to the server that answers it (Open-Meteo, ipify, or GitHub). Pawstat itself never collects it. ## Removing your data Quit Pawstat, move it to the Trash, then delete its data: ```bash rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Pawstat ~/Library/Caches/dev.pawstat.app ~/Library/HTTPStorages/dev.pawstat.app defaults delete dev.pawstat.app ``` If you turned on Launch at login, turn it off in Pawstat's Settings first, or remove Pawstat later in System Settings > General > Login Items. ## Questions Pawstat is made by Dam Tran Thanh.
